Just started in obstetrics?

You love obstetrics enough to do a Diploma or even an advanced position. That’s great, but what do you do now? The jump from doing obstetrics in a teaching hospital to working in a country town is huge and some find the transition difficult. Many doctors can’t find a way to continue their obstetrics. This is a terrible loss for both the doctor who wants to practice holistic medicine and the women of rural Australia who have a right to be delivered in their own town.
There is a way. You need to work in a supportive environment with the back up of experienced GP Obstetricians with close support from a tertiary hospital. With the right background you can practice obstetrics here and we will give you the support you need. While you are settling in we can have another doctor at every delivery and when you are comfortable with that we can have another doctor on call with you. We have a full LSCS service and anaesthetic back up 24/7. Our midwives are great and the hospital administration is committed to supporting birthing in Cooma.
If you love obstetrics but need a place to develop your skills this is it.
At present we have 2 Drs who do GP obstetrics. They cover about 180-200 deliveries a year. We have visiting specialists who have committed to provide weekend cover to enable us to be on call for obstetrics 1 weekend a month on average and 1-2 days during the week.
Our public patients are looked after by the doctor on call. This means that there is a reasonable workload as soon as you start. It also means that when you are not on call, you can relax and enjoy life in the region.
